Joseph Lanza

This season marks Joseph Lanza's 29th as Concertmaster of the former Orchestra London, now performing under the banner #WePlayOn. While continuing a busy schedule of orchestral, chamber music and solo playing on modern violin, he has, over the past two decades, developed a serious commitment to historical performance on baroque violin. Of particular interest has been the translation of discoveries in historic performance for modern instrument performance and the key issues in making the successful transition between the two musical worlds.

Joseph studied Baroque violin with Jeanne Lamon, Stephen Marvin, and with Marilyn McDonald at the Oberlin Baroque Performance Institute. Frequently engaged by Tafelmusik since 1996, Joseph has performed on numerous recordings and tours with this ensemble. He has performed double concertos with Jeanne Lamon on Orchestra London concerts and has annually directed that ensemble in Baroque programmes since 1998; he has made three guest appearances directing the Kitchener-Waterloo Symphony in baroque and classical repertoire.

Joseph has taught early music performance at Western University since 1995; this season, he becomes coordinator of the school's Early Music Studio.

Joseph has lead workshops on historical performance for modern orchestral players with the Orchestre de la Francophonie in Montreal, and with the National Academy Orchestra.
